Becoming a graphic designer

graphic designer

As a kid I grew up thinking the only thing I wanted to be as an adult was… to be happy. There was no specific career or job I was interested in pursuing. With time, I became what people would call ‘a creative’.

Music, writing, dance, photography, drawing... You name it, I've probably done it. During my teenage years I wrote over 1 million words of creative fiction in my second language – English. All because I had a bunch of stories in my head I wanted to share with my internet pals.

I went to university with the idea of becoming a journalist and then a writer. Looking back, I see the flaws in my plan, but at 17 and still living the ideal of ‘doing what makes me happy’ that sounded like the way to go.

It was in university that, against all odds, I found I was more interested in telling visual stories than writing non-fiction.

I used to draw during class far more often than I'm willing to admit to any of my old teachers. I graduated at the top of my class with a clear idea of what I wanted to do for the first time in my life.

It was then that I took a vocational course in graphic design. After one year of practical classes and a lot of intense work, I was offered a job straight from school. Nowadays, I design during the day and draw during the evening. My plan is to keep improving in both skills and slowly but surely join them together.

My path has been varied, but I don't regret any of it. Studying communication and journalism provided me with skills in writing and self-expression, studying graphic design became a passion.

I hope the future will allow me more vocational courses to help me improve my skills!
