Building positive relationships of young people to vocational skills

For me as the Chairman of the Trenčín Self-Governing Region the main priority in the field of education is the high quality of young people´s training for labour market needs, the promotion of vocational education and the building of positive relationship of young people to vocational skills.

The Trenčín Self-Governing Region is the founder of 21 secondary vocational and technical schools systemically accedes to the measures that lead to the reinforcement of secondary vocational education and preparation of the qualified specialists for the labour market needs.

The main supposal of the application of young people on the labour market is the functioning cooperation between the secondary vocational schools with the regional employers. The Trenčín Self-Governing Region acceded to the signing of the Memoranda of cooperation between secondary vocational schools, employers and professional organisations before the implementation of dual education system (until these days there were signed together 23 Memoranda of cooperation between 21 secondary vocational schools, 300 employers and 20 professional organisations).

In 2015 the Trenčín Self-Governing Region launched the unique project Hrdina remesla (A Hero of the Craft) to support the vocational education and training and to increase the interest of primary schools´ pupils to vocational education and skills. The project Hrdina remesla connects in attractive way the interests of primary schools´ pupils with the offers of the fields of study and the needs of the regional employers.

The Trenčín Self-Governing Region also last year promoted the polytechnical education at 147 elementary schools through the purchase of programmable kits, work tools and notebooks for all fully organised primary schools in the region. This purchase, funded by the budget of the Trenčín Self-Governing Region, was organised in order to develop the manual skills of the primary schools´ pupils.

Through these different activities we try to build the positive relationship of young people to vocational skills. The reason of our participation in the dual education system is simple. For the students involved in the dual education system the secondary vocational education means the implied employment contract and the salary, for the employers means the educated and skilled labour power, for the Trenčín Self-Governing Region there are well spent public funds and for the schools it means the education of the employees – specialists for the labour market needs, not for the labour offices.

For the promotion of the secondary vocational education we organise the secondary school presentation exhibition Stredoškolák – Hrdina remesla (High school student – The Hero of the Craft). This year´s twentieth edition of the secondary school exhibition as the part of the European Vocational Skills Week 2018 took place in the beginning of October.

I am fully aware of the importance of the vocational education and as the Chairman I try my best in this area. Thanks to this, the Trenčín Self-Governing Region is the long-term leader in the dual education system in Slovakia.
