Cruising the motorways with info trucks to promote excellence in VET

An exemplary promotion plan by a German employers’ association intends to show that choosing Vocational Education and Training (VET) can be an excellent choice, by running events associated with European Vocational Skills Week.

With currently over 8,000 training places available in the metal and electrical industries (M+E), there is a high demand for apprentices in Germany. For this reason, ‘Gesamtmetall’ (the Federation of German Employers’ Associations in the M+E industries) leads by example with an eye-catching flagship initiative that consists of several info trucks, cruising around different cities in Germany and informing young people about available training opportunities and different job profiles.

The vehicles provide two floors with 80m² of teaching space, offering enough space for a whole school class. They are equipped with 3D Monitors and offer 90-minute teaching units for young pupils, including exciting hands-on experiments.

The initiative has been launched around 30 years ago and proved to be extremely successful ever since. In 2017 alone, around 130,000 people visited the trucks. They can be requested by interested schools directly and are available for pupils during class time. The initiative is especially trying to reach out to girls and young women, showing that jobs in the metal and electrical industries are not only exciting for males.
