Fighting fires with training

To support the local firefighting forces, the VOLFIRE project is training firefighting volunteers in the Antalya province of Turkey.
Over half of the land in the Antalya province in Turkey is covered by forests. While beautiful, areas like this are prone to catching fire in the hot summer months leaving the local firefighting forces overstretched. These forces are often small, with outdated equipment, and while back-up has been provided by city-based firefighters in the past, waiting for that support has resulted in a loss of lives. The ESF-supported VOLFIRE project is determined to change this.
Launched in late 2016, VOLFIRE champions voluntary firefighting in rural areas as a way to provide local firefighters with the swift support they need. The central idea is that volunteer fire stations are established in rural areas of the Antalya province and local volunteers receive vocational training so they can act as first responders in the event of a fire. In this way, they can help to limit the damage while the professional firefighters are on their way.
In order to ensure the training the volunteers receive is of the highest quality, the project includes visits to other EU countries that have their own volunteer firefighting systems to share ideas, experiences and approaches.
