Firing up the glass industry

Like many traditional industries, the glass sector has been experiencing a lack of skilled workers over the last few decades. Ten Slovenian businesses – some large, some small – were determined to turn this around in their local area and so they joined forces to launch the CC GLASSWORKER project in 2011.
Funded by the ESF, the project began by assessing the local glass industry to establish its current state, its competence levels and which job roles were being left unfilled. The businesses then developed tailored vocational training programmes to answer these skills gaps and raise the profiles of the professions in question. The programmes covered eight dedicated areas including the glass industry, the tool industry, glass design, commercial knowledge, languages and ICT.
The training programmes took place at a dedicated ‘competence centre’ for human resources in the glass industry, which also worked to promote professions in the industry and encourage the sharing of knowledge.
In total, over 1,000 people took part in the vocational training during the two-year project and a further 416 current industry employees benefitted from internal training.
