Helping farmers to adapt and grow

Florian was determined to support the farming community in his local area and organising vocational training courses was the perfect way.
Barbuletu village in rural Romania has been growing fruit for generations. As one of the farmers in the area, Florin knew how difficult it could be to make a living from growing fruit alone. Despite expanding his family’s business, he still had to work a second job to generate enough income to support his wife and son.
Florin had long been active in farmers’ unions and federations, so it was a natural next step for him to become the regional coordinator for an ESF project aimed at boosting rural development in the area. The project helped farmers to increase their income and move from just growing for themselves to selling their produce through a sustainable business.
Vocational training and information was available through the project for up to 750 farmers in four areas, including Florian’s. The training focused on five key areas such as developing businesses, the transport and distribution of products and rural tourism.
Florian’s role as regional coordinator included visiting other regions in Europe to see how they approached farming. He then took what he’d learned back to Romania and organised training to share the ideas and knowledge with his own farmers.
