A sweet success

Éva wanted more from life than unskilled work, but she had lots of barriers to overcome. Hard work and training gave her the break she needed.
Éva Gyulai faced more challenges than most in her quest to secure a great job. Born almost completely deaf, she was trapped in unskilled work before an ESF-funded training project lent a helping hand.
Launched by the Blue Bird Foundation in 2006, the LIFT project helps young people like Éva to gain new skills and find employment. Éva was one of 16 people accepted on a year-long catering course and as well as developing new skills, she also received a salary throughout the year.
After qualifying as a cook, Éva was offered a job at a family-friendly restaurant in the Hungarian city of Szekszárd that’s also run by the Foundation. The Ízlelő restaurant prepares up to 140 meals a day and Éva quickly found her niche there: producing sweets and desserts.
Having a regular second income had a huge impact on the lives of Éva and her husband. They were able to buy their own home on the outskirts of Szekszárd and take on the task of renovating it. Éva recognises what working at Ízlelő has brought her and hopes that other people with disabilities get the chance to follow in her footsteps in the future.
