Yakakent is a quaint coastal city in Samsun Province in Turkey. Its population is nine thousand including the surrounding villages, whose students outnumber those in the city. In 2012, our VET journey began, seeing people's need for vocational high school.
At the request of some students for vocational training, we started our VET offering with two training programmes, "The Sick and Elderly" and "Early Childhood Development". This year, we opened the Vocational Education Department and brought in 29 non-formal education students to our school for both training and a diploma.
Our future plans include starting departments such as maritime studies, electricity and aquaculture. VET attracted me because it aims to unite trades with education and provides certification to learners.
The practical application aspect also makes this sector very attractive and our students also enjoy gaining experience abroad with European Union projects.
I had no experience but, just like learning about life while living, I gained work experience while working. I'm happy!
