Vocational education in Turkey has lost its prestigious position due to the lack of access to university of vocational education graduates. It has been agreed to establish a Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School with the name İstanbul Technical University (ITU).
I have been appointed headmaster of this school as the only professor working at ITU who has a doctorate degree. My motto is that issues are not problems, they are projects to be developed and, as a result, I have initiated a number of innovative practices.
Each high school student has been matched with a university professor as a counsellor and a university student as a mentor. I have organised 10 different teams in each department with different students from different years for a total of 30 teams.
With the support of their mentors, our students have been able to move forward quickly, learning and producing. The public has recognised all these improvements that have led to the inclusion of students in vocational education with 100 % success for the first time. The perceptions of the job market and the public have changed.
