AVETAE was established in 2010 by the Republic of Croatia for the purpose of planning, developing, organising, monitoring and improving the VET and adult education system in Croatia.

As the key VET stakeholder in Croatia, AVETAE is committed to advancing the quality of VET and adult education, modernising VET curricula, developing and adopting VET qualification standards, and developing and approving the methodology for adult education programmes. AVETAE is also responsible for: professional exams, professional development, advancement and in-service training for VET teachers; and recognition of foreign VET qualifications.

In addition, AVETAE serves as an intermediate control body for non-infrastructure projects in education, lifelong learning and science for the European Social Fund (ESF). AVETAE cooperates with leading international institutions in the field of VET such as the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), the European Training Foundation (ETF) and the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNESCO-UNEVOC).

AVETAE represents the Republic of Croatia on the Advisory Committee for Vocational Training (ACVT), acts as the National Reference Point (NRP) for the European Quality Assurance in Vocational Education and Training (EQAVET) Network and the National Support Service (NSS) for the Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe (EPALE).
