Building VET opportunities in Ireland

Ireland

I attended European Vocational Skills Week 2018 as a representative of the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland, who wish to become involved in the European Apprentices Network. The reason I'm attending here is to gain a better understanding and to identify ways in which Ireland can become more involved.

When I finished my secondary education, I didn’t want to go straight into college, I found this style of education wasn’t well suited to me. Instead, I decided to go into professional work, but after a few years I discovered that this wasn’t something I enjoyed. It didn’t provide me with opportunities to learn or progress. I then realised an apprenticeship would be best suited to my need to learn whilst also being able to work.

As VET experiences are so different in every country, it seemed important to be here and to gain awareness of what it is like throughout Europe. It has also allowed me to identify what processes and learning systems have been working best in particular places, and to take these ideas back to Ireland for future guidance.
